From photographer to all-rounded creative
Hey there,
I wanted to share a special design journey I embarked on with Annie Orenstein, a talented author with a forthcoming book on navigating the complexities of grief after losing a sibling. This project became a canvas not just for visuals, but for emotions and experiences.
About three years ago, I transitioned from being primarily a photographer to an all-rounded creative, delving into photography, illustration, and graphic design. This transformation allowed me to connect more intimately with clients, crafting designs that go beyond the surface and create genuine emotional connections.

Annie’s graphic design project
Collaborating with Annie was a profound chapter in this evolution. Her book, a poignant exploration of grief, served as the foundation for our designs. We aimed to encapsulate not only the pain but also the strength and hope that often emerge from it.

The colour palette was our first brushstroke. It had to strike a balance between vibrancy and serenity, and Annie’s insights were invaluable in refining our choices. The result is a palette that not only symbolizes strength but also mirrors the beauty of life’s myriad shades.

Central to our project was the logo – a capital “A” within an eye shape. This symbolizes strength in vulnerability and offers a visual representation of hope and healing. It’s a testament to the power of design to convey complex emotions.

Our illustrations went through an iterative process of exploration. We eventually settled on flat designs, which resonated as an authentic portrayal of the grieving process. These illustrations, devoid of religious imagery, serve as a visual narrative of strength and resilience.

Annie’s involvement underscored the significance of trust in collaboration. Her insights not only shaped the visuals but also steered the entire project’s trajectory. It highlighted the importance of open communication, allowing us to navigate challenges and refine the designs until they not only mirrored Annie’s vision but also spoke to a broader audience.

This project served as a poignant reminder of the transformative potential of art. Design isn’t just about visuals; it’s about crafting an experience that touches hearts. It’s about capturing the essence of a story and translating it into visuals that evoke genuine emotions.
