Retro Vibes and Real Talk on Freelance Design

As we wave goodbye to January, (and maybe even a few New Year’s resolutions that didn’t quite work out) let’s take a moment to look back at the start of 2025 and see what’s ahead. This isn’t just another recap, it’s an honest conversation about the creative journey, filled with lessons learned along the way. I hope these insights not only inspire you but also give you a clearer idea of the value behind every human-made design.

My latest creative projects

January was a busy, productive month, full of opportunities and challenges. I had the pleasure of working with clients from the U.S., Australia, and India, each bringing a unique vision that pushed me to explore new creative territories. One project that truly stood out was my collaboration with Feelin’ Baggy, a brand known for its oversized clothes aimed at the young generation. For them, I ventured into the world of retro design with a soft, pastel colour palette. I even tried my hand at creating cute mascot designs, a goal I’ve always had but hesitated to pursue because it felt overdone. Surprisingly, I loved the experience, and I might just explore more mascot designs in the future. The 70s groovy style has always been close to my heart, and it felt like the perfect way to express my love for this era. A big plus was that several of these designs captured the perfect mood for Valentine’s Day, just at the right time, since we are entering into the month of love.

The dark side of freelancing

Freelancing might look like the dream, working on your own terms, choosing projects that excite you, and having the freedom to express your creativity. But behind the scenes, it’s a journey filled with its own set of challenges. For every project that goes off without a hitch, there are moments that test your patience and resolve. There have been times when a client, after a promising start, simply disappears, leaving behind unfinished conversations and unfulfilled expectations. Other times, I’ve found myself in negotiations where clients try to cut corners or bargain down the price, not fully grasping the time, effort, and expertise that goes into each design. Also, I need to pay my bills too.

Communication can also be a hurdle. Picture this: a client reaches out in a language I barely speak, or they offer feedback that misses the deeper intention behind the design. It’s not that the idea isn’t good, it’s that sometimes the nuances of creative vision are hard to translate across different languages or expectations.

And then there’s the feedback loop itself. One moment you’re pouring your heart into an illustration, and the next, your client points out that it looks “too similar” to an image they saw online. What they might not realize is that every artist draws inspiration from somewhere. It’s the unique twist, the personal spin you add, that transforms inspiration into something fresh and original.

The reality is that people often don’t see the countless hours, the dedication, and the experience that go into each design and illustration. We creative folks see the world differently, and that’s what allows us to translate our imagination into reality. It’s a skill that should never be underestimated or undervalued.

Why authentic, human-created design matters

In a world where AI can generate images in seconds, you might wonder why it’s worth hiring a real designer. The answer is simple: real design is about more than just pretty pictures. It’s about emotion, intuition, and connection. AI might create many images quickly, but it can’t capture the little details that make an illustration feel warm and personal.

When you invest in human-created design, you’re not just paying for a finished product, you’re investing in a creative partner who listens carefully to your vision. I take the time to understand your goals and translate them into visuals that speak directly to your audience. My process is about more than just aesthetics, it’s about building a bridge between your brand and the people who interact with it. I bring my own experiences, cultural understanding, and a deep passion for art to every project, ensuring that every design carries a personal touch that technology simply can’t replicate.

Looking forward to February

Now, let’s shift the focus to you. As February rolls in, think about your own creative goals. A design that makes your audience feel connected, appreciated, and inspired.
